If you self-manage your Victorian rental instead of using an agency, tracking three different due dates on three different cycles is the easiest thing to let slip. Here's a simple way to stay on top of it.
Set up three recurring reminders
- Smoke alarm check: every 12 months, same month every year.
- Electrical safety check: every 2 years, from your last check date. If you've never had one, confirm directly with Consumer Affairs Victoria or a licensed tradesperson before assuming your tenancy start date is when the clock begins; we haven't found this specific point stated clearly by CAV.
- Gas safety check: every 2 years, from your last check date.
A calendar app reminder set 4-6 weeks before each due date gives you enough runway to book without rushing.
What to record after each check
Keep the date, the technician's licence details, and a copy of the report for every check. You're required to disclose the most recent gas and electrical check date to a renter before a new agreement, and provide a written copy within 7 days if asked.
Where the calendar gets complicated
If your gas and electrical checks are on different cycles to your smoke alarm check (which is likely, since they run on different intervals), you end up managing three separate clocks. The Complete Check resets all three to the same visit, so there's only one date to remember.
Let us track it instead
Book The Complete Check once and we track your renewal dates from there, calling you before anything's due rather than after. Book a check.
