Who does it
In Victoria, a gas safety check has to be carried out by a licensed or registered gasfitter holding the Type A Gas Appliance Servicing endorsement, registered with the Building and Plumbing Commission. It isn't something a general handyperson or property manager can sign off.
What gets checked
Every gas appliance on the property is tested: cooktops, ovens, gas heaters, hot water systems. The technician checks connections and gas lines for leaks, tests ventilation around combustion appliances, and runs carbon monoxide testing on anything that burns gas indoors.
If something's not right
Minor faults get fixed on the spot wherever possible. Anything bigger is documented clearly in your report with next steps, not left as a vague warning.
